Bengal History

What is a Bengal?Bengal colours & patternsWhat is a Asian Leopard cat?

Bengal Cats are the descendants of a cross between the Asian Leopard cat and a domestic cat. In the United States the first intentional and controlled hybridization of a domestic cat with the Asian Leopard by Jean Sugdens Mill was recorded in 1965 in Arizona. During the 1970's several cat breeders again began breeding Bengal cat foundation stock and the name Bengal was adopted as the official breed name. In the early 1980's two different bloodlines were began by Mrs Mill. She and other Bengal enthusiasts joined forces and through their effort, breed standards were established and registration was undertaken by TICA. By 1984, Bengal cats from a number of bloodlines were exhibited and judged in TICA shows worldwide in the new breed and colour class. In 1990, Bengals were accepted by TICA for championship competitions in their shows.
